case study

Bookfinder

A mobile app that helps readers overcome the difficulty of finding second-hand books and connects readers with a large community.

The Problem

The biggest problem readers are facing while they are looking for a second-hand book to buy is that it takes a lot of time to find the book they are interested in since they lack an organized platform that connects between buyers and sellers.
The process of finding a book involves diverse searches on various sites and platforms (e.g. Facebook) and checking each site on a daily basis, which makes the search extremely exhausting.
All of these unresolved issues cause a bad user experience.

According to the results of a survey I have conducted, it takes more than three weeks for 67% of book buyers to find the book they are looking for.
Another problem that has arisen from my survey's results is that book buyers find it difficult to locate sellers that live nearby or at least make deliveries. The credibility of the seller is also usually hard to measure.

Several more issues came up came up in the survey:

62%

There is difficulty to find booksellers that live nearby

Most of the time buyers can't find sellers that live nearby, therefor when the buyer finally finds the book he was looking for, he gives up on it because usually, the sellers won't make deliveries to his area.

36%

Expensive shipping cost

buyers reflected that sometimes, when a delivery is considered, it might be as expensive as buying a new book and that just beats the whole idea of second-hand book reading.

40%

Slim variety of second-hand books

The variety of second-hand books is usually less versatile than new books and special editions are rare and harder to find. Also, finding an entire book series will probably be an adventure of navigating between sites that will double the length of the search, then the frustration will cause the buyer to give up and buy a new and expensive book in the store.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Persona

Meet Suzan, she is 28 years old and lives in London. She is a bookworm and has versatile reading habits.
One of Suzan’s main hobbies, besides reading, is collecting fantasy & science fiction books.
Since Suzan is a university student, she cannot afford to buy new books, therefore she usually buys second-hand books.
Suzan’s process of finding the book she craves for is quite similar to other second-hand book readers: she starts searching on Facebook groups, goes to different sites, and after a long time of investing effort in the task at hand, she finds the book.
The seller then tells her that he lives far away and he won’t make a delivery or one of the other issues that have been reflected earlier.
Suzan keeps looking for a few more weeks until she gives up feeling frustrated.

The Solution

My way of resolving the difficulty second-hand book readers are facing while finding  books is making a front end platform for selling second-hand books, where the seller can publish the book he owns with pictures, in order to show it’s condition while buyers are capable of rating their credibility as sellers.

"Bookfinder’s Experts" will help you look for the book you want with their outstanding knowledge of hundreds of rare book repositories and second-hand book shops.

Target audience
the app is a social platform for people of all ages. Easy to use and suited to adults that like classic literature and old books.
It is also suited to those who cannot afford to buy new books.
The goal
a platform that will contain all the information buyers needs in order to buy the desired book, read and review the sellers and books.
Readers can connect with other readers with matching taste and get references for more reading material.
The added value
Save time and effort in finding second-hand books to read, even enjoying the control we have over the process of finding the book along the way.
User Flow

The process of building the application was challenging since I wanted to distinguish Bookfinder from other apps in the market, thus, making the end-user choose my app and not the other way around.
Also, I took into consideration the user flow and translated what I had in my mind into wireframes.

The Design

For the app's design, it was important for me to give meaning to the books themselves.
I chose a clean interface that would not interfere with the color that highlights the books. The interface is mostly white and black with a touch of green that calms the user.
The illustrations in the app cause the user to identify with them and causes and additional good user experience. the user feels a personal connection with the app.
The flow of the app is very convenient and suitable for all ages.

ONBOARDING

In every step of the way, I have imagined the user’s experience and needs.
In the user’s first interaction with the app, I tried to cover all features that are included in the onboarding, which explains, as a visual summary of the main characteristics of the app. Thus, the user understands the uses of the product and what he may acquire while using Bookfinder.

Easy Connection

In addition to resolving the main problem, the app will have a social aspect so users will have the ability to contact, befriend and follow other users with similar taste. They will be able to see what their friends read, the comments and ratings so that they can choose whether or not they want to add the book to their wishlist.
That is why I figured that it might be easier for users to log in with Facebook and sync their friends list. That way the user won’t have to register and type all logging information.

Getting to know the readers better

One of the main features of the app is a genius system that helps the user find additional books that match their taste.
The user will be given the option to choose the taste in books, by selecting genres and favorite books.
The user can also skip it and continue straight to their objective in the app - finding and buying second-hand books.

The finding process

The user will be given the ability to search for a book, by name or author, so that if he doesn’t remember one, he can use the other.

Maximum Comfort

Search results, by default, will show the book by their condition. The users I have contacted claim it is of great importance that the book will be intact and without defects.
The user will also have the ability to filter the results, by choice of the rate of the seller, location, and price.
The app has a map view - the user can see how close the books are, even format and organize the results.
This feature saves time because it eliminates the irrelevant results of the far locations.

Experts, to your aid!

If the book was not found in Bookfinder, there will be a premium option that helps to find the desired book with the help of experts - real people that just know exactly where to find rare books in various repositories that are not accessible online and rare stores.
